The Sorceress

The Sorceress by Michael Scott

Rating: ★★★★☆

This is the third book in the six book series.  As always there was tons of action and this book just flew by.   The thing I love most about this series is how the author incorporates the many different historical and mythological characters.  Some obvious ones like Machiavelli and Mars the god of war but then some more obscure ones like Palamedes.  You learn more about history and lore with each book, he weaves in stuff you may have learned in school with stuff you probably didn’t know about.  I find it all fascinating so I love these books.

This book is called the Sorceress because a lot of it is devoted to Perenelle Flamel, the wife of Nicholas Flamel.  She is known throughout history as the wife of the famed Alchemist but she in herself is a force to be reckoned with as we see in this book.  She’s super intelligent and not just in the ways of magic.  Like the Weasley twins in the Harry Potter series she saw the benefit in learning how to do things the non-magical way and it pays off for her.  She proves why she is such a threat and not just by using magic but by using human instinct, something most immortals wouldn’t give a second thought.

Josh, Sophie, and Nicholas manage to get in and out of a few scrapes and gain valuable experience and lots of new information.  They meet new friends and new enemies (or old depending on how you look at it).   They test the limits of their powers and grow in ways no one thought they could or would.  It’s hard to believe that in these 483 pages only a day and a half has passed because so much happens.  One of my favorite parts is learning what Dr. John Dee’s ring tone is.

Of course, because this book is a part of a series there are questions that need to be answered.  First, who is the necromancer and second who is Dr. John Dee working for?  I have no clue about the necromancer but my guess is he’s working for Hades?  Who is more dark than him? Any thoughts?
